"Excuse me?" Nina whispered, her voice wavering, weak and birdlike, "Hello?"
But there was nothing but a great, dark cavernous silence, broken only by the thunderous pulse of her own heartbeat. "Hello?" she demanded, louder, but a look at her phone showed her that the call had been disconnected.
Pulling up her call log, there was no record of it ever happening.
She stood there for a long time, staring at the phone in her hand, and later, much later, she found herself sitting on her sofa, talking with Lily in a hushed voice, afraid that someone was somehow listening.
By the time she called the police, she felt a little silly for putting up a fuss, but they promised her they'd send someone over as soon as they could, told her to lock her doors and try and relax.
